A Few Poker Strategies

By: Richard Bleuze

A poker strategy is really just a poker plan, a poker approach, or a poker tactic.  A poker strategy is aimed at making a big winning or preventing a loss.  Every player need not necessarily have the same kind of poker strategy for playing.  A poker strategy can be anything that does not break poker rules and the way in which poker should be played.

There are many strategies to learn when playing poker. Poker, especially Texas Holdem is growing in popularity   Of all the table games available, poker is the one that demands a consistent strategy to win at it  Even if you have a bad hand, a good poker player can have a high chance of winning if they use a good winning poker strategy.

A few poker strategies that a player needs to know are:

1.  Learn to fold.  Folding weak hands regardless of how much money has been invested in the pot is one kind of poker strategy that I recommend.  Especially for beginning players.  Folding weak hands will minimize the amount of stakes you may loose with playing any further.  Such is the approach of many tight players.

2. Have a good poker face.  Your experienced opponents are going to be reading your face and body language.  Many poker players show their opponents what they have in their hand by unknowingly displaying their poker hand on their face.  Thus, try to be consistent with your expressions regardless what type of hand you have been dealt.

3.  Set a betting limit.  Remember, to stay within your limits.  Bet with your head and control the betting as much as you can.

4.  Bluffing.  Many poker players will bet more despite holding weak hands.  As a beginner, I recommend that you do not bluff since many experienced players can tell if a player is bulfing or not.  However, my opinion is not held by most poker players.  A few experienced poker players can even make a  player with even the best hands to fold in fear by the way they react.  These players will tend to fake a good hand with tactics such  like betting very high stakes, laughing aloud, getting up and walking round the table and many mock moves that impersonate a person with a good hand.  Phil Helmuth is one such example.

Poker strategy is not really meant for the experienced player.  Although, a poker strategy is needed if you are going to be in a tournament.  A poker strategy is meant for the person with just little experience.  Similarly, bluffing, in my opinion. should be practiced by an experience poker player.

Just remember, that the best way of winning at online poker, or indeed any type of poker, is practice and experience.  Without either, no amount of knowledge of online poker strategies will be of help to you.

Therefore, it is to your benefit if you spend more time playing the game of poker rather than reading about poker strategies and things.  Leave that to a time when you are better able to play poker without having to stop and think about whether or not you have a possible good hand or not!

In the game of poker, the best of hands can loose despite many great moves and calculative approaches.  This can be in part due to luck.  Although, poker is a game of skill.  A poker strategy that is based on luck may win a lot of times, but optimized winning will be only based on that which will be based on the mathematical part of the game that helps you arrive at winning chances and the probabilities of losing.  Thus, set up a poker strategy and practice  until you are experienced and a winner.
